Is it normal for my 3 month year old to start growling if I pick him up during a play session?

Growling and jumping at 4 months

My otherwise pretty well trained puppy started grumbling, growling and jumping up on furniture all within about a week. His grumbling started slowly and I generally redirect him to do a task. Then he began doing it more often and it started to take a little longer to settle him down. Now his grumble quickly turns into a bark. He recently has started barking and biting while playing fetch. I am working redirecting him or using leash pressure to help get him to settle down. I want to get this nailed down because I am afraid he is going to move on to biting.
