4 Year Old Miniaute Aussie Scratching And Itching

by Kathy
(Coral Springs, Floirida)

My four year old Mini Aussie is scratching the hair off her legs and her butt area. Itching and scratching a lot. When I brush her there is a lot of dandruff. She does not have fleas as my other dogs are fine and she is on flea prevention. She has been on the same food for 4 years I started a few months ago. I have tried oatmeal shampoo, hydrocortisone spray and it does not seem to be helping. Any suggestions please? Thank you

Genetic
by: Neil Coy

Over the last 35 years, I have had 3 Aussies and everyone of them have had what my vets call grass allergies. It seems to start in the spring and lasts until the first hard frost. I believe that many Aussies may have a genetic propensity for such allergies. The only relief that I have found (as little as it is) is a cortison shot in the spring and benedryl pills in the fall.

I think as Aussie owners, this might just come with this breed. I have the same problem with mine and use the same solution. My vet told me the same thing.. Grass!

i have two aussies and had the same problem. This isn't going to work a 100% but will cut it back a lot. You need to add fish oil to his food. You don't have to add a lot just 1 tablespoon is enough. I did get mine from my vet but the jell tabs got expensive so just go Amazon and they have a great product called MaxxiOmega and its made in the usa by a great little company. It comes in a pump can and no mess. Let me stress, to make sure its a fatty acid for dogs and what ever you get make sure ingredients have fish oil in it. Hope this helps it helps did for mine
