Australian-Shepherd-Lovers.com Newsletter #011
Hello <>,
A Well Trained Aussie is a Happy Aussie
We all know how smart Australian Shepherds are and how much energy they have to burn. You will want to find ways to channel your Aussie's intelligence and enthusiasm. Now that spring has sprung more of us will be out and about with our Aussies and we will want them to be on their best behavior at the local park or agility course. Australian Shepherds love to learn and put their skills to use. A little time invested in training goes a long way toward making a happy Aussie -- and a happy owner!

Researcher Seeks Feedback from Aussie Breeders!
Leigh Anne Clark, Ph.D., a Research Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University found the gene that causes merle a couple of years ago and started working on harlequin shortly thereafter. Clark says, "I have mapped harlequin and am finishing up that work in the Great Dane now ... I would like to talk to breeders who understand how it works in the Australian Shepherd. I would also like samples so that I can determine if it is the same gene in other breeds."
You can visit her website for more information here: http://www.cvm.tamu.edu/cgr/
If you have information about the harlequin coat pattern in Australian Shepherds you can contact her by email: lclark@cvm.tamu.edu
Agility Training - Fun for You and Your Aussie!
Few breeds are more enthusiastic about agility training than Australian Shepherds. It's a sport that was made for high energy dogs like Aussies. Whether you want to take it to competition levels or just want to have some fun at the local park, agility training is a great way to get out into the sunshine and have fun with your dog.
While some of us are handy enough to build our own agility equipment (not me) the rest of us still have options without having to spend a fortune on competition grade equipment. When you are just starting out you will want to get a few simple pieces that you can set up in your yard to begin practicing. Having a couple of jumps, weaves, see-saws and tunnels will give you enough to get started and get a feel for agility training. You can start practicing and if you join a group in your area you will also have some equipment you can practice with at home between classes.
You can find reasonably priced agility equipment for not much more than it would cost you to buy all your own materials and build it yourself. Manufacturers, like Affordable Agility buy larger quantities of materials and don't pay retail prices like you would at the local hardware store either. They also have production facilities to make the agility equipment efficiently to quality contol standards. But if you enjoy working with your hands building your agility equipment yourself is still a good option.
If you want to get started with agility training or are looking for a new piece of equipment see if Affordable Agility has what you are looking for. They have, well, affordable agility equipment in both practice and competition grades.

Looking for the Best Dog Training Equipment?
It makes sense to invest in quality dog training equipment. You want to be sure your Aussie's collars and leashes are safe and secure and won't break when you need them most. They are more than just training equipment, they are safety equipment when it comes right down to it. That's why we recommend Australian Shepherd owners get the best quality collars, leashes and dog training equipment possible.

Great Dog Training Website with Tons of Info
As you know Australian Shepherds are "aussome" but Aussies are one breed that expecially needs ongoing training to keep them on the straight and narrow. Having an untrained Aussie will lead to unhappy situations all around. I recently discovered a dog training website that has a wealth of dog training information from soup to nuts (aggression, barking, biting, chewing, digging, games, obedience, tricks, crate training, come on command and on and on.)
I noticed on their home page that Dr. Phil has even contacted them for advise. (I guess there are some things that Dr. Phil doesn't know.)
DogProblems.com provides members with access to their whole resource library, dog training forum, group rates on pet products and live chat sessions with top dog trainers from around the world for starters. You'll have to check out their site to see everything they've got though...

Dog Quote for Today
"I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love. For me they are the role model for being alive."
