But I wanted to start this newsletter with a warning for all Aussie owners. Check out our first item about Ivermectin. Aussies can be very sensitive to this medication and it can be very toxic for them. I've finally added another photo gallery page and am excited about an e-book about Australian Shepherds that's in the works. In This Issue: - Health Warning About Ivermectin - New Australian Shepherd Photo Gallery Page - Australian Shepherd Lovers E-Book Project Gets Underway! - Specials and Coupon Codes - Photo of the Month - Dog Quote for Today Health Warning About Ivermectin Australian Shepherds can have drug sensitivities as they frequently have a mutation of the MDR1 (Multi Drug Resistance 1) gene. However, this commonly causes toxicity from ivermectin an ingredient found in heartworm medications. Aussies can be 200 times more sensitive to ivermectin as other breeds. There is a DNA test to determine if your Aussie carries this gene though. This is also a problem with Collies and you can find a list of other drugs that can be especially toxic to Aussies here: http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-VCPL/drugs.aspx From the list above you will see that it is not only ivermectin that you should be concerned about. According to the article from the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine Clinical Pharmacology Lab, "Loperamide (ImodiumTM; antidiarrheal agent). At doses used to treat diarrhea, this drug will cause neurological toxicity in dogs with the MDR1 mutation. This drug should be avoided in all dogs with the MDR1 mutation." Since Australian Shepherds are known to have the MDR1 mutation it is always advisable to consult with your veterinarian before giving your Aussie any medications. The hardest part is picking just a few of the literally hundreds of great photo submissions I've received.
