Australian Shepherd Lovers Newsletter -- Fatal Drug Reactions and How To Keep Your Aussie Safe August 10, 2013 |

Australian-Shepherd-Lovers.com Newsletter #058 Hi Everyone, I want to make sure you are all aware of a genetic mutation to the MDR1 gene that affects Australian Shepherds. Your Aussie may or may not have it. The only way to know is to have a test done for it. You need to know that this condition can result in fatalities. Dogs with the mutation become highly sensitive to many drugs—drugs used for different things. For example, Ivermectin used for anti-parasite medications or Metronidazole (Flagyl) and Loperamide (Imodium) for diarrhea. Milbemycin (Trifexis) used for heartworm has also been documented to cause problems in dogs with the MDR1 mutation. Other drugs from tranquilizers to chemotherapy agents and cardiac drugs are also implicated. There are many other drugs that can be dangerous. The only way to know if your dog is at risk is to have them tested for the MDR1 gene mutation. See links below for where you can get the test (these are not advertising links). Please note that when researching the web many have asked in forums (including the forums on our site) if a given drug is okay for Australian Shepherds. Just because someone else's dog tolerated a drug does NOT mean it is safe for your dog. Their dog may not have the mutation or may be less sensitive to a given drug. The same drug at the same dosage could result in a severe or fatal reaction in another dog. I would suggest having your dog tested and making sure your vet is aware of the problem and how serious the consequences can be.
