Australian Shepherd Lovers Newsletter -- Epilepsy - Treat Warning - Spooktacular October 24, 2013 |
You are receiving this because you subscribed to the Australian Shepherd Lovers Newsletter. This newsletter is also available online here. Australian-Shepherd-Lovers.com Newsletter #060 Hi Everyone, Recently, I've received all too many emails from readers whose Aussies are suffering from epilepsy. Sadly, I have also heard of fatalities related to this disease which occurs at a higher rate in Australian Shepherds than for other breeds. I just wanted to remind people of this condition and suggest becoming more familiar with it. Hopefully, it does not, and will not affect your Aussies but it is good to have an overview of epilepsy before a first seizure occurs. It can be very disconcerting and frightening if you don't know what is happening. It's best to figure out what to do before this happens so you know how to respond to keep yourself, your family, your other pets and, of course, the Aussie that is having the seizure safe. Here's a link to more info on the site >>> Epilepsy in Dogs Health Alert—FDA Warns of Jerky Treats If you have a dog or cat that became ill after eating jerky pet treats, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would like to hear from you or your veterinarian. The agency has repeatedly issued alerts to consumers about reports it has received concerning jerky pet treat-related illnesses involving 3,600 dogs and 10 cats in the U.S. since 2007. Approximately 580 of those pets have died. To date, FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) has conducted more than 1,200 tests, visited jerky pet treat manufacturers in China and collaborated with colleagues in academia, industry, state labs and foreign governments. Yet the exact cause of the illnesses remains elusive. >>> Read more on the FDA website Affordable Agility's Spooktacular Sale On a cheerier topic, I wanted to make sure to let you know about Affordable Agility's Spooktacular sale.
