Australian-Shepherd-Lovers.com Newsletter #109 Getting Your Aussie To The Next Level Australian Shepherds are incredibly intelligent and the sky-is-the-limit when it comes to their training. Often, once a dog is trained to a certain level—they come when called, eventually; they follow basic commands, for the most part; and they don't have any behavior issues, except for that aggressive thing they do whenever they are faced with strange people or animals... Their training progresses to a certain point but then life happens. Things come up, we get busy, and training sessions get moved to the back burner. Besides—they are "functionally trained". They behave well enough that it seems to be working and not bad enough that they pose a clear and present danger. Now is a great time of year to hone your skills because, as you know, Aussies need mental stimulation. They also love to learn and to make you happy. Training is also a great opportunity to develop an even stronger bond with your dog. If you get started now, just think of the team you will be by spring. No more repeating commands over and over and over. No more repeatedly calling your dog at the park as they blithely ignore you. No more embarrassing walks with you being dragged down the street in front of your neighbors. It doesn't have to be that way! And you'd be amazed how quickly you can take your Aussie's training, and your bond, to the next level. Whether you are just getting started, are moving forward with your training, or are dealing with specific behavior issues you can check out the dog training section on the site for articles, products, or recommended dog training programs to help you on your way.
