Important Reminders About Warmer Weather For Australian Shepherd Owners

Today I broke out the garden hoses and turned the outside water back onā€”one of the official signs around here that warmer weather is here and summer is on the way.

Along with warm (and hot) weather comes the risk of overdoing it in the sun for both us and our Aussies. Heatstroke in dogs can be a real concern as they don't have the same built in cooling system that we do. Here's an article with more information for you:

Coping With Heatstroke in Dogs

Another potential problem that can arise as we get out and have fun in the warmer months is overdoing it with exercise. Aussies are well known for how much they need exercise and won't stop until they dropā€”sometimes literally. Exercise Induced Collapse in Australian Shepherds is a real issue that Aussie owners should be aware of. This condition is also commonly mistaken for Border Collie Collapse (which can also occur in Aussies). Here is an article that covers both (and there is a video at the end of the page that shows what happens during BCC):

Exercise Induced Collapse Vs. Border Collie Collapse in Australian Shepherds

Let's have fun out there and enjoy the warm weather while it lastsā€”safely!

All the Best to You and Your Furry Friends,

~ Anton

This is my boy Red, he is just over two years old. I adopted him from the Pasco Humane Society in Florida. He was a 7 month old pup and I was his 4th owner. He was a problem dog, super high energy with no discipline, no training and a biter. He was certainly a challenge and honestly one I thought that may be beyond my capabilities for the first few months. It took about 3 months before I could pet him without getting bit, but eventually we made the breakthrough and connected. Frisbee was the key to expending his energy and allowing him to calm himself. He is still very high energy but he is now a fantastic dog, very well behaved and a true joy. I'm so thankful for him, he keeps me moving and brings me so much happiness, we go pretty much everywhere together. (Photo: John Callaghan)
