Australian-Shepherd-Lovers.com Newsletter #128 Urgent Alert: Toxic Algea Is Killing Dogs There has been a spate of tragic events involving a toxic blue-green algea that has been killing dogs. A day that starts as a fun trip to the lake ends at the vet's with a dog that is dying or dead on arrival. It is truly shocking how quickly this takes effect! This affects all dog breeds and can also affect cats, livestock, wildlife, birds, fish and even humans according to this article on the ASPCA website. From another article on WebMD Pets: "The algae produce two different toxins: one that causes neurological problems, and one that leads to liver
failure, according to David Dorman, a professor of toxicology at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Signs that a dog has ingested blue-green algae include twitching, weakness, seizures, vomiting, and diarrhea. Although it is more common to see symptoms within minutes or hours, it might be days before the toxins take effect." Just staying out of the water may not be enough as areas near the water can still be toxic. "The wind may blow them onto the soil as well, so areas near the water may also be dangerous for dogs, says Val Beasley a professor of veterinary, wildlife, and ecological toxicology sciences at Pennsylvania State University. βDogs will lick them from the water, lick them off their fur, and they will sometimes eat them off of these other surfaces and can readily be poisoned that
way,β he says. He explained the algae that cause neurological problems act like very potent nicotine, causing twitching and paralysis. Those that affect the liver cause the animal to hemorrhage to death." Stay safe out there everyone.
