Are Australian Shepherds Escape Artists?

by Sue Johnson
(Richmond, VA)

I am considering getting an Australian Shepherd puppy and I'm wondering if they are the type of dog who constantly tries to escape. I had a Brittany and we couldn't even open the front door without her flying out and being gone for hours.

I now live in the city not too far from a busy road and that would be a real problem. I have a big backyard that is fully fenced, but can the dog still get out?

Not mine.

My Aussie never does that, and for good reason. We have too much fun together! We live on 3 acres and he is outside on his own much of the day and never leaves the yard.

Australian Shepherds Are Very Trainable

Aussies are very smart and trainable, but they also have a herding instinct. Make sure you train your dog to stay when the front door is opened.
