Australian Shepherd Aggressive Towards Certain Breeds

by Victoria
(Gurnee, Illinois)

I adopted an Aussie two years ago. He is six years old. He is very intelligent and can be very loving but he absolutely hates bull type dogs and Malamutes.

When I walk him and encounters other dogs he is friendly and wants to play but if he even sees one of the above mentioned breeds he goes absolutely ballistic. I can’t even get his attention, even with treats when he gets like this.

I’ve tried being patient with him and I’ve also scolded him (but never physically reprimanded him).

How do I handle this? Other than this problem he’s a great dog.

Maybe a past experience

Years ago my Aussie was attacked by a Pitbull. Ever since, she responds assertively any time we see one. She is fine with other breeds. Your pup may have had a bad experience with a dog or dogs similar to those he now reacts to. So he may have very good reason to act as he does. I would say that avoiding those dogs would be a good idea.
