Australian Shepherd Grooming Question

by Kim Simpson
(Poland, Me, USA)

How can I get my Aussie to like being groomed?

I have tried using a comb, a FURminator, and brush. Each time I try to comb her, she bites at the grooming tools. I have taken her twice to a groomer. The first time she came out fine and the second time, she shaved her. My intent is to keep her from getting mats. Lately I've been having her relax on the couch and while we cuddle I try to gently comb through her hair. Help! Anyone have any good tips?

grooming aussie

I had that problem with my 3.5 month old aussie puppy. My trainer suggested using high-value food to associate the brush with something good. I use baby food (small jars of meat and meat gravy). I show the brush and then have the puppy lick the food. I do it a few times until he is comfortable with the brush. Then i let him lick the jar while i brush him. He usually doesn't protest. I keep doing this until he associates grooming and brushing with a positive feeling.
