Dog Agility Supplies To Help You And Your Dog Succeed

By Anton Hout, author of The Guide to Aussie Training & Care

Dog agility supplies are a necessary part of the routine when it comes to agility competition. You want to make sure that your dog is prepared for any eventuality and ready to give his or her best each time. That means making sure you have everything you need to keep your dog performing at peak level at all times.

There are any number of supplies that might be used during agility competitions, from clickers and treats to water bowls to first aid supplies. Any of these and many more can be found through most major retailers with a simple online search. It will help to be aware of the various items you might need so you know what to look for and can find them at a reasonable price.

Of course, primary among dog agility supplies are treats and clickers or timers. These are the basics of any kind of training and agility is no different. You'll want to track your dog's speed through a course with a hand-held stopwatch and you can guide him quickly and easily with the use of a clicker to help keep him on course at all times. And no training is complete without a reward, which is where the treats come in, offered in a variety of flavors and sizes.

When doing dog agility training you need more than just agility equipment for complete training, care, and safety needs.

Because agility training can be very hard work, it is important to keep your dog properly hydrated while competing. You can do this with a portable water bowl. There are even some bowls designed to attach to the side of a traveling crate so that your dog has a nice, shady sanctuary to retreat to between runs or after a competition. The crates themselves come in various sizes to accommodate all breeds of dogs and some are even collapsible to make them even easier to transport.

Dog Agility Supplies To Keep Your Dog Safe

Safety is another primary concern and there are many dog agility supplies you can find that are geared toward keeping your dog injury free while competing. Chief among these are dog boots, which come in a variety of sizes and fabrics and are designed to protect sensitive paw pads as well as allow for better traction, which can be essential on an agility course, to help avoid nasty slips and falls.

If you don't want to rely on boots, or your dog simply isn't comfortable wearing them, there are other ways of improving traction, including the use of anti-slip spray, which can be applied directly to the pads of your dog's feet without risking any harm. These sprays are made from the same kind of rosin that human athletes use to improve their traction or grip on athletic equipment.

Other dog agility supplies that may come in handy include cooling cloths or collars, pain relief gel to treat any aches or pains incurred in competition, or, for outdoor competition, insect repellant spray to keep pesky bugs from distracting your dog as he runs the course. The better equipped you are, the better you and your dog will be able to focus on the task at hand and focus is essential in agility training.

If you're headed for agility competition, make sure that you've got everything you'll need to keep your dog healthy, happy and safe. You'll notice the difference as your performance times improve.
