Fear And Spay

by Kendra
(Short Beach, CT)

My new Aussie is almost 6 months old. We've had her for 3 months now and although she has been continuously positively exposed to life, she still seems so afraid. She is due to be spayed on Tuesday and I am terrified that the trauma will make her more afraid or worse, aggressive! Any advice? Should I wait?

Regardless of the fear element, 6 months is too young for her to be spayed. Please do some serious research on this issue. You will find that it is now recommended that if you do have your dog spayed, you wait until she is fully mature. This is for her future health's sake. The best age for spaying varies with breed but is approximately 14 months of age. This probably means going through at least one heat, but that is not as bad as some would have you think.
