How Can I Set Up My Australian Shepherd Mix to Be Home Alone?

I return back to the office in January and will have to leave my Australian Shepherd mix alone for up to 8 hours. I'm reading you can't leave these dogs alone but I have no choice, I have to work.

Please tell me how I can set my dog up to be left alone.
