How Do I Stop The Barking?

I have a Miniature Aussie, 4 years old, named Yadi. He is a very loving dog who, when out in public, loves people and other dogs. He thinks everyone is his best friend. The problem is that when anyone comes in the house that not me or my wife, he barks—loudly and a lot. He has never bitten anyone and if the people stop and pay attention to him, eventually he stops. It is extremely annoying, though, if someone stops by and is only staying for a few minutes. I have tried Green Apple spray with the command "No barking" but it only works when I stand by him with the spray bottle.

Any suggestions?
