Increasing Aggression In 17 Month Old Mini Aussie

by Rochelle

Need suggestions on what to do to about my 17 month old Mini Aussie's increasing aggression. She was spayed about a month and a half ago. Has been through puppy, star puppy, and several sessions of obedience training, and has been doing introductory agility since April.

I'm lost at what could be triggering some of her aggressive situations and what to do to remedy them. We also have an 8 lb, 3 yr old Toy Schnauzer who is her playmate. When our Schnauzer returned home from grooming, our Mini lunged at her, at was attacking. I had to physically restrain her and separate them. Could it be she doesn't recognize the Schnauzer, or the smell from grooming, or the that she's jealous the Schnauzer was gone? What could be going on? The Schnauzer gets groomed every 6 weeks, so this has happened several times, but the last time was more intense than before.

I love both dogs, and am now afraid she will severely injure our Schnauzer if I don't figure out what is causing this behavior. I also have four rambunctious grandchildren that I watch frequently and am afraid she may attack one of them, if her aggression keeps increasing.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Is it only toward your schnauzer that your Aussie shows aggression? If so, it could simply be a control thing between two females, the Aussie competing to be top dog. When the other dog is gone for a while she may resent it coming back. It might be a good idea to keep them apart for a while in that situation.
If she starts nipping or growling at your grandkids however, that is a larger problem that might need expert help.
