by Amy
(Missouri)

My Aussie started having seizures after I feed her lamb and rice dog food. The vet told me that happens alot with Aussies. Is this true?

Lamb and Rice

I have a one year old mini aussie and he has eaten science diet lamb and rice and was perfectly fine. I asked my vet before I fed him that and she told me I could feed him any "flavor". I have not ever heard of the lamb and rice being a problem. Good luck!

I'm not sure if this is the case however, I can tell you from personal experience, that when my male aussie, who is now passed (from old age)experienced constant vomiting on lamb and rice(not immediatly however. I had taken him to see the vet on many occasions, and they couldn't find the cause. They recommended to put him on Pepcid which did help with vomiting. They said sometimes as they age, this can happen. It did work, however, I knew there had to be a cause. After changing his food back to chicken and rice, I had no further problems. So, this may or may not be true but I wouldn't take the chance if I were you. It's not worth it. There are many other options out there today. Hope this helps.

My Aussie has been happy and healthy on California Natural lamb and rice for over a year now.

I'd have your Aussie checked for epilepsy. My first Aussie was diagnosed with epilepsy at a year and a half. It was incredibly hard, because his seizures were so severe. I was convinced that chicken caused them, so I never fed him chicken. But, honestly it has nothing to do with food. My Dakota passed away just before he turned 8. He was a very special boy, and I miss to this day.

My 5 year old tri-color started having seizures 2 years ago. He also has a delicate constitution apparently from the side effects of the Zonisamide. I finally got some great direction from my vet and now feed him Science diet dry food for sensitive stomachs with a bit of Psyllium fiber added and some water or chicken stock. It solved the problem of very soft stools from the drug.

The Zonisamide has helped but he still has them, but they are less often and less impactful. He bounces right back where he used to be knocked out and lethargic for a day. I tried CBD for 6 months before putting him on Zonisamide and honestly it did nothing. For us it's preferable that he has them in his sleep. He panics when he feels it coming and it's awful so see. It's hard to see your dog suffer, but I finally just leaned into it and I'm grateful it's not worse. We still have lots of quality time together.
