Is My Dog Going Into Heat Too Early?

by Corina
(Virginia)

I’m a first-time Aussie owner, and naturally there’s a lot I don’t know about specifics pertaining to the breed. My dog is a little over 5 months old and today I discovered she was bleeding from her genital area.

I went online and for the most part, it says dogs her size don’t usually go into heat/get their first period until they’re at least 6 months old. I’m planning on taking her to the vet just to make sure everything is alright, but I just wanted to hear opinions from experienced Aussie owners.

Is this normal?

That does seem early to me. I guess since all of mine went 7 months (1 month over 6) that it is probably normal to go one early. Call and ask your vet to be sure and to ease your fears.
