Leash Training A 5 Month Old Aussie

by Jen
(Wisconsin)

My husband and I just got a Miniature Aussie this morning from a rescue. He has never had a collar or leash on before. He is comfortable with the collar now, but when we put the leash on him, he will not budge. He just sits there. When we tell him to come and give a little tug, he starts fighting the leash and flips on to his back. He is currently sleeping with the leash attached to his collar.

Any advice on how we can successfully teach him to walk on a leash?

I had a dog that did that... it took awhile but it finally came around... give it time. You could also try a harness.

Yes, just be patient. You can put on the leash and let him drag it around with him. He will get used to it(just make sure he is not left unsupervised). Use treats or toys to encourage him to move forward.
I would give him a few days to become accustomed to you and your family and his environment. Don't be in a hurry to teach him everything at once. Give him time. They are very smart and come around quickly. Relax. He will learn.
