My Aussie Is Growling At Me!

by Linda
(California)

This is getting worse! When we approach her to give her a pet of affection, she growls at me and the kids. We are not rough and her breeder has described her at 7 weeks as a "soft dog" so we know she can demonstrate fear. It is getting worse, just now I went to pet her on the head and she did more than growl, she made a sound that comes when a dog is about to bite. She is my best companion and with me all day. Where is this coming from???

Aussie Growling
by: Nonnie

Your didn't say how old your Aussie is. It sounds like fear aggression. If that is the case, you need to let her know she can trust you, depend on you.

Sit on the floor, towering over her is scary. Approach your Aussie with your hand down below their chin. Allow her to smell your hand. Take it very slow. Don't look at her eyes, look off to the side. Put your hand on the floor offering her a treat - whether it is a food morsel, her kibble, peanut butter, something she will like.
