We met our beautiful little boy just 3 days ago when my daughter and I saw an ad on Craigslist for a litter of irresistible puppies that needed good homes. We have been doing a lot of research on which type of dog was the right breed to add to our family ever since our 14 year old Husky passed away 5 months ago. We have a 19 month old Doberman that can use an active companion, but we also needed a dog that would do ok with our small flock of backyard chickens and ducks.
After researching the Aussie I realized that this seemed like the right breed for us! The temperament, energy level, loyalty to the family and herding instead of hunting instinct were all the qualities that we were looking for. So far, Chevy is doing great! I know its only been 4 days and there is going to be lots of hard work ahead of us, but I see perfection already!
He is great with our 4 kids, loves our Dobie (her name is Camaro by the way... hehe) and is loved and protected by her. We also have 2 smaller dogs, a Chihuahua and Chihuahua mix that he does really well with although he is definitely trying to be the boss of the food bowls with them. He is learning to be gentle with the flock and I already see his instinct coming out to "round em up." Although we don't live on a farm and only have a decent size yard, that won't stop us from putting our boy to work!
We are surrounded with open space, dog parks, and numerous hiking trails. We live in Colorado so it won't be an issue tiring him out! I am so glad that we made the decision to add this little guy to our family. I am also so grateful to the couple who took the long trip out to Missouri to rescue Chevy and his littermates from a terrible fate. If only there were more people like them in the world. They wanted nothing in return but to see these pups go to a loving, safe home. I will definitely post updates of his progress! I'm so happy I found this site!
