Australian Shepherd Puppy Care Tips To Help Raise A Happy, Healthy Aussie Puppy

By Anton Hout, author of The Guide to Aussie Training & Care

Puppy care tips are an essential for any new dog owner. Bringing home a pup is not all that different from having a baby. There will be a lot of cute moments and a lot of difficult ones as you both learn to adapt. The most important thing to remember is that puppies are still just learning and discovering their world and when they have the inevitable accident or misbehavior, it's not intentional, so you don't want to overreact. Here are some other tips to keep in mind:

  • First Stop...The Vet! As with a human baby, a puppy's first stop should always be at the doctor. Finding a good vet is crucial so that you can ensure that your puppy is starting off on the right foot. Your vet will be able to test for serious health issues or birth defects, administer shots and begin heartworm treatment. He can also make recommendations about exactly what to feed your puppy to ensure she grows up healthy and strong.
  • Stick to A Schedule. Routine is critical for puppies so this may be the most important of the puppy care tips. You'll want to set a regular schedule for eating, for going to the bathroom, and for sleeping. Have a regular spot for her food and water bowls and check with your vet to find out how often she needs to eat. Take your puppy out at regular times as well so that both of you can get used to the process. And remember that wherever your pup sleeps is likely where she'll sleep as she gets older, so even though it may be tempting to let her up on your bed, if you don't want her there as an adult dog, don't start the habit now!

  • Choose The Right Food. Proper feeding is essential to help your pup grow and flourish. More active breeds like the Australian Shepherd may have different nutritional needs than laid back lap dogs, so you should take breed into consideration as well. How often you feed your puppy may vary, but generally speaking it should be 4 meals a day from 6-12 weeks, 3 meals a day from 3-6 months and 2 meals a day from 6-12 months. Medium sized breeds, like Aussies, can usually switch from puppy food to adult food between 9 and 12 months.

  • Bathroom Training = Patience. By far the hardest part of raising a puppy is housebreaking. When it comes to puppy care tips, bear this in mind...there will be accidents, so try not to lose your patience when this happens. Instead, try to learn when your puppy is signaling you to go out and don't hesitate to respond. The sooner you both get into a routine of going out the sooner you can make those accidents a thing of the past.

  • Obedience Can Be Fun! Believe it or not, most puppies actually enjoy obedience training and it can be a great way of forming a bond between you, not to mention teaching proper behavior. For working dogs like the Australian Shepherd, dog training can be an essential part of their regular routine and is generally something they take to easily...so it can actually be fun for both of you.
