Sprayed by Skunk

If your Australian was sprayed by a skunk PLEASE help!

Our Aussie got sprayed by a skunk a few nights ago. That morning we bathed her with Odormute. The smell is no longer overpowering, but still noticeable. Mom searched online, and today we washed her again with a mixture of equal parts dish soap, vinegar, and hydrogen peroxide, warm rinse. We didn't get the head, for fear of leaking mixture into eyes.

She still smells. We have washed other breeds sprayed by a skunk with the Odormute and it worked. We verified with a friend who is a Vet Tech regarding hydrogen peroxide/dish soap/vinegar wash, this how they tell their clients to solve the problem.

I feel maybe the reason we are not fully removing this smell is due to the unique type of coat of the Aussie. I don't know what else to do.

Sprayed by a Skunk

When our dog got sprayed by a skunk, we used a few large cans of tomato juice. It worked for us.

My aussie and lab got sprayed at the same time! It's a good thing I didn't let them in the house. They spent 2 days in their kennel until I got to the vet and purchased special shampoo that worked pretty well. It helped but the smell (faint) was on both of them for several months. The aussie, having the longer hair, took longer to extinguish the smell. I did purchase tons of baking soda and peroxide to keep on hand in case it happened again.

I used dawn dish soap and vinegar when my Aussie got skunked and it worked really well, I also sprayed her with peroxide before I rinsed her off (no peroxide by eyes). For her face I used vanilla extract on a washcloth, that helped also

Nature's Miracle

Living in a rural area of northern AZ, my two aussies unfortunately get sprayed about 2-3 times a year. We always have a bottle of Nature's Miracle Skunk Spray Remover around the house just in case. I purchase it at the local feed store or Petco, but I'm sure you can get it online as well. I spray it on the dogs as soon as they get sprayed and leave it on until it dries, and then wipe it off after. You can get it on their head and around the eyes as well! It's great stuff!!

hydrogen peroxide and baking soda mixture for skunk spray
by: bret

I have used a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda when my Aussies get sprayed. both are cheap enough to keep large amounts on hand for the late night washing in shower or bath.
Kills odor well.

You jinxed me! My Aussie got sprayed this morning - face/head/neck dripping with skunk spray. I used Vet Solution Thiotrol Shampoo that I purchased from my vet 2 years ago (also available on line). Works very well - does not mask the odor, gets rid of it. She will probably have a slight odor when I get home.
