My lovely 6-year-old Australian Shepherd (Buddy) has recently started to lose clumps of hair all over and has lost basically all undercoat—his coat is so thin you can see his skin in parts. His coat was beautiful until about 3 weeks ago.
We had routine (12 monthly) blood tests done 4 weeks ago and his Urea levels were above average so we are planning to retest his kidney function in a week. However, his hair has now decided to majorly shed and I am really concerned.
He is not putting weight on (he actually looks skinny because of the hair loss) so I am not sure whether his thyroid is something to look into - hypothyroidism usually they lose weight amongst other symptoms?
I wondered if anyone can offer some information for me to research further before I see my vet again—specific to Aussie's maybe?
Thanks,
Sam
