Use Of Benadryl For Dogs

by Tom
(Puyallup)

We have heard that a large number of medicines can be toxic to Aussies. We have heard too that Benadryl would be beneficial for an itching problem as well as the sedative effects for a 1 year old who likes to play all night. Can we use Benadryl?

Note from Anton: Check with your vet before giving your dog treatments suggested on this website (or any website). You will also want to confirm appropriate dosages with your vet.

My aussie had an episode and her vet said it was most likely an allergic reaction to a bee sting. She shook, foamed at the mouth, stared into space - I thought she was having a seizure. He told me that I could use Benadryl - 1 milligram per 1 pound of dog weight (30 lb dog would get 30 mg of Benadryl. Internet stated that pill form is best. I have used Benadryl a few times with good results. Her episodes are not severe anymore. I wonder if I could use an EPI pen??

Please contact your vet for advice before trying this.

But, my 1st Aussie/Lab mix had horrible nasal allergies leading to frequent sinus infections, so my vet started him on benadryl once a day which he took for the rest of his 14 1/2 years. It never made him sleepy and he never had another sinus infection. We also put him on flax oil everyday which also helped.

My Aussie had a reaction to either her puppy shot or rattle snake shot (they were given at the same time). Her face swelled up and she was scratching at it like crazy. My vet had me give her benadryl and it helped right away. He also gave her a steroid shot once I got her to his office.
