Why Is My Australian Shepherd Fat and Lazy?

My Australian Shepherd is 22 months old and keeps gaining weight. He is up to 72 lbs. I cut his daily food allowance in half. It did not help. All he does is lay around the house all day.

He used to be very active and playful in the morning when I first got up but now he just lays in the hallway and stares at me. My Vet said that I could have my Aussie tested for thyroid disease but he said that thyroid disease at this age is rare.

Does anyone have other suggestions?

Is he getting plenty of exercise? They need a job. If you sit around all day they will mimic you, just to be somewhat close to you. Walk the trails, go to the dog park, teach him to pull your yard cart or wagon when you do gardening, chase a squirrel down the fence. Anything just to keep his mind active.
Good Luck.
I have a mini named Noelle, her job is to keep squirrels away from the bird feeders and pick up sticks out of the yard so I can mow the grass, she always gets a treat after.

Cocoa is my male Australian Shepherd. Ever since we got him, he has been super mellow and chill. When I take him for a walk, he usually stays by my side unless he sees a cat or squirrel.
